It is now globally-accepted that for education to effectively achieve its true objective, the curriculum and content must be competency-based. The competency–based education (CBE) approach allows students to advance based on their ability to master a skill or competency at their own pace regardless of environment. This method is tailored to meet different learning abilities and can lead to more efficient student outcomes.
The same push is going on in professional circles towards developing training programmes that are competency-based and not mere academic workshops that are not matched to the requirements of the underlying job.
In professional training, Competency Based Training (CBT) is a method of instructional design and delivery in which content is aligned to the roles and responsibilities specific to a job. This approach is generally used in professional and workforce development programs (as opposed to topic based training). Competency based training is also used in job or role based certification programs. At the end of a CBT programme, participants possess the requisite skills and knowledge needed to complete specific workplace activities at an industry standard of performance, in a range of work environments and situations.
The Certified Risk Management Professional (CRMP) programme was developed using the curriculum of the globally-acclaimed RIMS-Certified Risk Management Professional (CRMP) programme which was developed by a panel of Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) in the Risk Management profession. The SMEs led by an experienced facilitator, developed a job task analysis of the duties, knowledge and skills required by the minimally competent risk management professional to successfully fulfil their role. Each activity was then broken down into tasks, knowledge, skills and abilities.
A task is a work activity that is observable, has a start and end point and leads to a product, service or decision. Knowledge, for the purpose of this curriculum implies an understanding and familiarity with facts and information. Skills, abilities and attributes allow an individual to perform their tasks with a high degree of proficiency. The tasks, knowledge, skills, and abilities identified by the SMEs are critical components that are believed to be the most essential parts of a job for risk professionals.
From this exercise, the SMEs defined a Risk Manager as ‘…a partner who supports the organization to leverage the opportunities and uncertainties associated with its goals and objectives. A Risk manager leads the development and implementation of risk management practices that enable the organization to make effective decisions that create and sustain value. Arising from this, five domains or core competencies were identified, namely
- Analyzing the Business/operating Model
- Designing Organizational Risk Strategies
- Implementing the Risk Process
- Developing Organizational Risk Competency
- Supporting Decision Making
The curriculum expounded the details of these domain areas to include duties, tasks and steps; specialized knowledge required; skills, abilities and attributes; and tools, equipment and resources required. The program benchmarked and obtained best-in-class knowledge, management tools and frameworks such as COSO and ISO 31000 related to the domain areas. RIMS then exposed this certification to the rigorous official accreditation process by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) under ISO/IEC 17024:2012, making it the only risk management certification in the world to hold accredited status.
Africa Risk Institute (ARI), has been appointed an accredited training provider for the RIMS-CRMP certification programme. The arrangement allows ARI to take this curriculum and adopt it to the local environment while retaining the best-practice component. Participants attending the ARI CRMP training therefore have the liberty to choose whether to obtain an ARI Certificate or sit for the RIMS exams and obtain the RIMS-CRMP certification.
The training is sector-agnostic as by its nature, it focusses on equipping Risk Managers with competencies that can be applied to different contexts of their professional lives.
